Chaunoproetus was named by Richter and Richter (1919) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-m D Fame-u Sepkoski's reference number: 421,802].

It was corrected as Chuanoproetus by Jell and Adrain (2002).

It was assigned to Drevermanniinae by Feist (1992); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); to Proetidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Cyrtosymbolinae by Basse and Lemke (2020) and Bault et al. (2021).
