Philanthus annulatus was named by Theobald (1937). Its type specimen is Marseilles Geologic institute 1, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Camoins-les-Bains (Coll. Marseille), which is in an Oligocene lacustrine marl in France.
