Taxonomy
Lepidotus ornatus was named by Agassiz (1843).

It was recombined as Colobodus ornatus by Bassani (1895), Woodward (1895), Gorjanovic-Kramberger (1905) and de Alessandri (1920); it was recombined as Paralepidotus ornatus by Tintori and Olivetti (1988) and Tintori (1996).
