Taxonomy
Mesodon hoeferi was named by Gorjanovic-Kramberger (1905). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Hallein (Hoefer coll), which is in an Alaunian marine marl in Austria.

It was recombined as Eomesodon hoeferi by Poyato-Ariza and Wenz (2002) and Hornung et al. (2019).
