Odontocyathus was named by Moseley (1881) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi R Sepkoski's reference number: 796]. It is extant.
It was synonymized subjectively with Aplocyathus by Chevalier (1961); it was reranked as Stephanocyathus (Odontocyathus) by Squires (1958) and Kiessling (2014).
It was assigned to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stephanocyathus by Squires (1958) and Kiessling (2014).
