Cyphaspides was named by Novak (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg D Give-u Sepkoski's reference number: 421,1106].

It was assigned to Aulacopleurinae by Thomas and Owens (1978); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Aulacopleuridae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
