Taxonomy
Gerastos (Devonoproetus) was named by Lutke (1990). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Proetus by Adrain (1997) and Jell and Adrain (2002); it was Proetus (Devonoproetus) by Feist and Talent (2000); it was reranked as Devonoproetus by Sepkoski (2002) and Basse et al. (2016).

It was assigned to Gerastos by Lütke (1990); to Proetus by Feist and Talent (2000); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Proetinae by Basse et al. (2016).
