Taxonomy
Bibio morio was named by Heer (1849). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Radoboj (K.K. Montanistischen Collection), which is in a Sarmatian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal limestone in Croatia.

It was recombined as Plecia morio by Skartveit and Nel (2017) and Skartveit and Krizmanić (2020).
