Eleutherocentrus was named by Clark (1935) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u Sepkoski's reference number: 795]. Its type is Eleutherocentrus petersoni.

It was assigned to Trilobita by Clark (1935); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Bathyuridae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
