Hypermegethes pilchi was named by Carpenter (1992). Its type specimen is KUMIP 203055, a forewing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Clinton Lake emergency spillway, which is in a Kasimovian estuary/bay siliciclastic in the Lawrence Formation of Kansas.
