Formonia was named by Richter (1928) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-l Sepkoski's reference number: 421,1106]. It is not extant. Its type is Drevermannia formosa.

It was reranked as Drevermannia (Formonia) by Lütke (1968).

It was assigned to Drevermannia by Lütke (1968); to Proetidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Drevermanniinae by Basse (2007).
