Fuscinipyge was named by Ormiston (1972) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife Sepkoski's reference number: 421]. It is not extant. Its type is Fuscinipyge yolkini.

It was assigned to Dechenellinae by Zhou et al. (2000); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Proetidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
