Taxonomy
Spilaptera americana was named by Carpenter and Richardson (1971). Its type specimen is Herdina H459, a forewing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Pit 6, Coal City, Mazon Creek (Herdina coll), which is in a Westphalian D deltaic mudstone in the Carbondale Formation of Illinois.
