Ischyrophyma was named by Whittington (1963) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l O Llvi-l]. Its type is Ischyrophyma tuberculata.

It was assigned to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dimeropygidae by Jell and Adrain (2003).
