Kathwaia was named by Grant (1966) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad-u P Djhu Sepkoski's reference number: 624]. Its type is Kathwaia capitorosa.

It was assigned to Trilobita by Grant (1966); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); to Proetidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Bollandiinae by Owens (2003).

R. E. Grant 1966Cephalon semicircular in outline, genal spines absent. Glabella inflated, protruding anterior to border, with two small but prominent lateral pre-occipital lobes. Eyes small, near mid-length of cephalon. Thorax with nine segments. Pygidium short, with border but no border furrow. Ornamentation granular, present on all parts but strongest on cephalon.
