Lepidoproetus was named by Erben (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi D Emsi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1106].

It was reranked as Cornuproetus (Lepidoproetus) by Alberti (1967).

It was assigned to Cornuproetus by Alberti (1967); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); to Tropidocoryphidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Cornuproetinae by Bault et al. (2021).
