Kotatherium was named by Datta (1981). Its type is Kotatherium haldanei.
It was assigned to Symmetrodonta by Datta (1981); to Tinodontidae by Prasad and Manhas (1997); and to Kuehneotheriidae by Averianov (2002) and Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004).
