Liobolina was named by Richter and Richter (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l C Vise-l]. Its type is Liobolina nebulosa.

It was assigned to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); to Proetidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Cummingellinae by Lerosey-Aubril (2012).
