Taxonomy
Amphitherium rixoni was named by Butler and Clemens (2001). Its type specimen is BMNH 36822, a mandible (right dentary), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Stonesfield Slate quarries, which is in a Bathonian marginal marine sandstone in the Taynton Limestone Formation of the United Kingdom.

Clemens 2001Differing from Amphitherium prevostii in: (1) smaller size of its postcanine dentition; (2) talonid ridge of P/5 extends directly posteriorly from the main cusp (protoconid) and there is not anexpansion in the metaconid region; and (3) metaconid of M/1 is similar to that of M/2 in its fully lingual position.
