Brachymetopus was named by M'Coy (1847).

It was assigned to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); to Brachymetopidae by Hahn et al. (1985) and Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Brachymetopinae by Owens and Hammann (1990) and Vanderlaan and Ebach (2015).

Iriania was named by Archbold (1981).
