Gerastos (Oehlertaspis) was named by Pillet and Vanĕk (1974). Its type is Proetus rondeaui.

It was reranked as Oehlertaspis by Jell and Adrain (2002) and Bault et al. (2021).

It was assigned to Gerastos by Pillet and Vanek (1973); to Proetidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Proetinae by Bault et al. (2021).
