Parahystricurus was named by Ross (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-l O Aren-u Sepkoski's reference number: 388,795]. It is not extant. Its type is Parahystricurus fraudator.
It was assigned to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hystricuridae by Jell and Adrain (2002) and Adrain et al. (2003).
