Petigurus was named by Raymond (1913) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l O Llvi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 795].

It was assigned to Bathyuridae by Jell and Adrain (2002); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Bathyurinae by Fortey and Bruton (2013).
