Phillibole was named by Richter and Richter (1937) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-u]. Its type is Phillibole aprathensis.

It was reranked as Archegonus (Phillibole) by Hahn et al. (2012).

It was assigned to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); to Proetidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Archegonus by Hahn et al. (2012).
