Podoliproetus was named by Šnajdr (1980) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg D Emsi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 933]. Its type is Proetus perinsignis.
It was assigned to Proetidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Proetinae by Johnson and Fortey (2012) and Bault et al. (2021).
