Hylurgidae was named by Gistel (1848). It is extant. Its type is Hylurgus.

It was reranked as the tribe Hylurgini by Bouchard et al. (2011), Petrov and Perkovsky (2018) and Legalov (2019).

It was assigned to Scolytinae by Bouchard et al. (2011); to Hylesinitae by Petrov and Perkovsky (2018); and to Hylesininae by Legalov (2019).
