Psephosthenaspis was named by Whittington (1953) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi-l]. Its type is Bathyurellus strenuus.

It was assigned to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Bathyuridae by Jell and Adrain (2002) and Adrain and McAdams (2012).
