Skemmatopyge was named by Richter and Richter (1919) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-m Sepkoski's reference number: 802].

It was reranked as Chaunoproetus (Skemmatopyge) by Feist et al. (2000).

It was assigned to Chaunoproetus by Feist et al. (2000); to Proetidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cyrtosymbolinae by Basse and Lemke (2020).
