Spinibole was named by Chlupáč (1966) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1045]. Its type is Spinibole olgae.

It was assigned to Archegoninae by Owens and Tilsley (1995); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); to Proetidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Cystispininae by Rak and Viktorýn (2010).
