Winterbergia was named by Hahn and Brauckmann (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 895]. It is not extant. Its type is Carbonocoryphe hercynica.
It was reranked as Carbonocoryphe (Winterbergia) by Hahn et al. (1996) and Vanderlaan and Ebach (2015).
It was assigned to Proetidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); to Carbonocoryphe by Hahn et al. (1996) and Vanderlaan and Ebach (2015); and to Weaniinae by Müller and Hahn (2019).
