Taxonomy
Culicoides obuncus was named by Borkent (1995). Its type specimen is MCZ 9023, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Cedar Lake (MCZ collection), which is in a Campanian terrestrial amber in Canada.
