Mecynoptera splendida was named by Handlirsch (1904). It is an impression. Its type locality is Produits colliery, Sainte-Félicité pit, no 23, Flénu, which is in a Westphalian C terrestrial siliciclastic in the Flénu Formation of Belgium.
