Nannosuchus was named by Owen (1879). Its type is Nannosuchus gracilidens.
It was assigned to Goniopholidae by Delair (1958); and to Goniopholididae by Andrade et al. (2011), Puértolas-Pascual et al. (2015) and Martin et al. (2016).
