Calymenella was named by Bergeron (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: O Ashg-u Sepkoski's reference number: 690 Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l O Llde-u Sepkoski's reference number: 795]. Its type is Calymenella boisseli.

It was assigned to Homalonotidae by Harrington and Leanza (1957); to Reedocalymeninae by Dean (1983); to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002) and Sepkoski (2002); to Calymenidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Eohomalonotinae by Thomas (1977) and Congreve and Lieberman (2008).
