Taxonomy
Protokollaria was named by Brongniart (1885). Its type is Protokollaria ingens. It is the type genus of Protokollariidae.

It was assigned to Protokollariidae by Handlirsch (1906), Handlirsch (1919), Handlirsch (1922) and Carpenter (1992); and to Hapalopteridae by Rasnitsyn (2004).
