Omalia was named by Van Beneden and Coemans (1867). It is the type genus of Omalidae.
It was assigned to Omalidae by Handlirsch (1906); to Cacurgidae by Pruvost (1930); to Omaliidae by Handlirsch (1919), Handlirsch (1922) and Carpenter (1992); to Geraridae by Brauckmann et al. (2001); and to Omaliaidae by Ross et al. (2013).
