Planulina was named by d'Orbigny (1826) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Anomalininae by Cushman (1927) and Bertels (1964); to Planulininae by Mailhe et al. (1967); to Planulinae by Loeblich and Tappan (1984); to Anomalinidae by Wienrich (1997); to Foraminiferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Planulinidae by Margerel (2012).
