Denella was named by Ludvigsen and Chatterton (1982) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-m O Cara-u Sepkoski's reference number: 392]. Its type is Denella cumera.

It was assigned to Eomonorachinae by Ludvigsen and Chatterton (1982); and to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002).
