Culiseta was named by Felt (1904). It is extant. It is the type genus of Culisetini.

It was assigned to Culicidae by Solórzano Kraemer (2007); to Culiciformes by Szadziewski and Giłka (2011); to Culisetini by Harbach (2007) and Harbach and Greenwalt (2012); and to Culicinae by Pielowska et al. (2018).
