Taxonomy
Gesomyrmex corniger was named by Emery (1891). It is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Sicilian amber (Bologna coll), which is in a Miocene terrestrial amber in Italy. It is the type species of Sicilomyrmex.
It was recombined as Sicelomyrmex corniger by Wheeler (1915) and Wheeler (1929); it was recombined as Sicilomyrmex corniger by Brown and Carpenter (1978) and Spahr (1987).
