Gyrometopus was named by Jaanusson (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Nileus lineatus.

It was assigned to Diaphanometopidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002).
