Llandovacaste was named by Edgecombe (1993) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1055]. Its type is Acaste birminghamensis.

It was assigned to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Acastidae by Edgecombe (1993) and Jell and Adrain (2002).
