Taxonomy
Ovalocephalus was named by Koroleva (1959). It is not extant. Its type is Ovalocephalus kelleri.

It was assigned to Hammatocnemidae by Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (1991); to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002); to Pliomeridae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Hammatocneminae by Zhou and Zhou (2019).
