Taxonomy
Ovalocephalus was named by Koroleva (1959). It is not extant. Its type is Ovalocephalus kelleri.

It was assigned to Hammatocnemidae by Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (1991); to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pliomeridae by Jell and Adrain (2003).
