Palacantholithus was named by Deflandre (1973) [Sepkoski's age data: C l Sepkoski's reference number: 546]. Its type is Palacantholithus stellatus. It is the type genus of Palacantholithidae.
It was assigned to Palacantholithidae by De Wever et al. (2001); to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002); and to Albaillellaria by Noble et al. (2017).
