Belostoma was named by Latreille (1807). It is extant. It is the type genus of Belostomatidae, Belostomatinae, Belostomatini.

It was assigned to Hemiptera by Weyenbergh (1869); to Belostomatinae by Nel and Paicheler (1992); and to Belostomatini by Ribeiro et al. (2018).
