Spathacalymene was named by Tillman (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-u S Ludl-l]. It is not extant. Its type is Calymene nasuta.

It was assigned to Calymeninae by Tillman (1960); to Calymenidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002).

Tillman 1960Papillate calymenid trilobite characterized by great but variable development of U-shaped or spatulate process from anterior border, very deep preglabellar furrow, large rostrum with open V-shaped an- terior edge and unknown posterior edge, distinct flattening of tops of axial and pleural thoracic lobes, twelve (?) or thirteen thoracic segments, pygidium with five axial rings and four pleural furrows, the latter extend- ing only two-thirds of way to ventral edge of pleurae, very faint interpleural furrows on inner parts of pleurae only
