Tesselacauda was named by Ross (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-l Sepkoski's reference number: 795]. Its type is Tesselacauda depressa.

It was assigned to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pliomeridae by Jell and Adrain (2003).
