Taxonomy
Callianassa alpha was named by Stenzel (1935) [Rathbun 1935 lists Callianassa alpha as a new species, but it is not regarded as such in the 1935 reference because it was already named new by Stenzel in this 1935 reference. Also, in her 1935 reference, Rathbun named Callianassa alpha var. Rathbun n. sp. which is assumed to be equal to Callianassa alpha n. sp. by Stenzel in 1935.]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Chickasawhay River, which is in an Eocene carbonate marl in the Winona Formation of Mississippi.
