Taxonomy
Callianassa mortoni was named by Rathbun (1935) [Originally named Callianassa mortoni by Pilsbry in 1901, has since been reclassified as Mesostylus mortoni. Callianassa mortoni var. punctimanus also described by Pilsbry is believed to be the same as Callianassa mortoni, now known as Mesostylus mortoni.].

It was recombined as Protocallianassa mortoni by Bishop (1983), Kuehne (1999) and Schweitzer et al. (2010); it was recombined as Mesostylus mortoni by Schweitzer and Feldmann (2012), Feldmann et al. (2013) and Feldmann et al. (2019).
